Backsplash Band

The Story

The Backsplash Band was formed with Jon Sheffield and Pedro Cirilo and two members who were selected from auditions held from an advertisement online.  The 3rd member was Livio Giannantonio a drummer and 4th and final member was Chris Ritchings Lead guitar player.  The Backsplash Band used an online booking agency to provide gigs for private parties and corporate events and parties.  The band stayed busy in thru 2015-2016 and did gigs all over Connecticut and Massachusetts.   Their last gig was the Triumph Christmas party at the Hilton ballroom in December 2016.  Although they did get together for practice one time after the December 2016 gig, they eventually disbanded by 2017.  There have been talks about a reunion but that so far has not come to fruition as of 2021.

Jon and Pete Duo

Band : ,
Title : The Jon & Pete Duo
Release Date : December 7, 2025

The Story

The Jon & Pete Duo was started around 2008.  After the chaos that was the New Mystic Creek band, Jon was looking for a more professional show that could be marketed to some of the smaller clubs that were not setup for full size bands.  After putting an advertisement and auditioning at least 12 different guitar players, Pete Madison came over.  He was not familiar with the music I was doing and after the audition asked if he could come back again after he had more time to go over the material.  I agreed and on the second meeting, he nailed all the songs, had them almost perfect.  Only problem was that he couldn’t sing at all and I was looking for a guitar player/singer to share the singing duties.  I solved the problem by adding backup vocals to the drum tracks we were using.

A booking agent helped us secure a rotating circuit that included all the Moose lodges, Elks lodges and many bars and restaurants though out Orlando and Cocoa Beach.  These included: The Cork Room, The Red Lion, Johnny’s Filling Station, Ain’t Misbehavin, Holly & Dolly’s, McWells, The Cocoa Beach Pier and Coconuts on the Beach.  We had a very busy schedule and were booked almost every weekend and some weekdays.  After getting short changed by The Cork Room, Pete decided he had had enough and was never heard from again.  Jon used several other guitar players including the very talented Jeff Adkins, Dave Birks and others to finish out the bookings and then dissolved the Jon & Pete Duo.  It wasn’t until moving to Connecticut in 2011 that Jon joined in with some musicians he found on bandmix.com for what was to become the Sound Reason Band.

The Story

The New Mystic Creek band was a band Jon put together around 2003 after moving back to Florida in 2001.  The name came from Jon’s previous band name Mystic Creek.  The band stayed together off and on for 4-5 years off and on and played several gigs including one in Thornton Park near downtown Orlando at Burtons on July 4th 2007 and another at Artisan Park in Celebration Florida (see video below) before Jon decided to give up the complexities of a band and perform as a duo by auditioning guitar players and starting up the Jon & Pete Duo.

The Story

Originally named the IMTA band as a joke from Jack Fussinger’s (Joe’s brother) old club from the 70s “International Marijuana Tokers Association”, at Joe’s suggestion it was renamed Highland Band to commemorate the street our grandparents lived on.  This band only played one live gig at Three Cheers Bar in Hebron Kentucky. After disbanding, Jonathan Sheffield and Joe Fussinger continued recording original songs and released a CD called The End of the Line under the Highland Band name and then joined other band members Mike Wyric and Bob Fancher to form the Mystic Creek band.

The Story

The NRG Band (pronounced “energy”) was formed around 1992 and stayed together for about 3 years. The band played steady throughout the Central Florida area for the whole time they were together and logged many hours on stage.

NRG Band Video

This is the only know video of the NRG band and was taken in the early days of a band that was together for 4 years The video is from a live gig at Kim Long’s restaurant/bar in 1992. It was recorded with the technology of the time onto a VHS tape. The sound on the VHS tape was completely distorted and unusable. There was also an audio recording made the same night on a Foxtex 4 track cassette recorder.

Restoration

In 2008 the soundtrack from the 4 track cassette tape was digitized, remixed and equalized with noise reduction added. The VHS video was digitized with color correction and other editing including removing the soundtrack from the video and replacing it with the soundtrack from the 4 track cassette recorder.

Title : Jon & Les
  1. No Reply This song was our first attempt at recording with a 2 track reel-to-reel recorder. It features Les on lead vocals/rhythm and lead guitar/drums, Jon Sheffield on bass/backing vocals. The recording process was new to both les and I on this one, we put the drum track on after the guitar track which proved to make tempo harder to sync. (this is the only recording we did this way). Les also had to do many tries at the first track guitar and lead vocals where you can hear him almost start laughing where he makes a mistake in the second to last verse of the song. For this new mix I added an ambience track giving Les's vocals a stereo sound, added effects and digitally lowered my vocals from the second track. 4:32
  2. Ballad of John & Yoko recorded by Jon & Les circa 1987 3:18
  3. Twist & Shout Recorded 1987 with Jon Sheffield on vocals after many takes, his voice is in shreds. Les on Drums 2:43
  4. The Reason Why Jon & Les 2:50
  5. Summer Rains This quickly recorded song features Les on drums/lead guitar, Jon on acoustic rhythm/lead and backing vocals, Brett Schultz on bass guitar and Rick Warsing on drums. For this new mix I added an ambience vocal track and effects. 2:15
  6. You'll See Original Song Written 1986 by Jon Sheffield, recorded by Jon & Les with Rick Warsing on Guitar 3:12
  7. I should have Known Better Featuring Les on Lead Vocals & Jon on Backup Vocals, recorded in 1987 2:44
  8. I'll Be Back Again Recorded in 1987 by Jon & Les 2:19
  9. Marikesh Express Jon & Les 2:54
  10. Outside My Window Jon & Les 3:20
  11. Painted Wagon Painted Wagon by Cream sung by Les recorded by Jon & Les 1987 3:21
  12. What's New Original Song by Les Soltescz recorded by Jon & Les 1987 3:31
  13. The Spirit is One With Les's creative mind fueled by his incessant intake of marijuana in those days, this original song was spontaneously produced. Les was inspired by a circus poster he saw about the American Indian when he wrote this song. This song features Les on lead vocals and all guitar work, Jonathan Sheffield on drums, tambourine and maracas. 3:49
  14. Kaley Found on the Reel to Reel tape at the end, this strange and funny clip of one of Les's friends sound testing the reverb on the mixing board and having some fun. 2:13
  15. youl-see-jon-les 2:36

Story

Jonathan Sheffield and Les Soltescz wrote songs together and recorded them and some cover songs in a makeshift studio in his parents detached garage I called Hollenbeck Studio after the name of the street nearby. The recordings were made circa 1985-87 on 2 track reel-to-reel connected to an old style 12 channel mixing board.  Jon met Les thru Steve Hendrickson who I had played with in the Allies Band, at a party where Les was playing piano and singing Beatles songs.  In the mid 80’s meeting a fellow Beatles fan was rare.  After visiting Les at his parents house where he was living at the time, we discussed 60’s-70’s music, played albums from his huge LP collection that was meticulously sorted and filed on his shelves and talked about recording originals and covers.  I had been experimenting with using a Sony Reel-to Reel tape machine for live recording as cassette recordings would distort.  We recorded using 2 track technology.  On the first track one of us would play drums while the other sang and played the song on guitar.  on the second track we would listen to the first track and add bass, backup vocals, guitar and if another person (Bret Shultz or Rick Warsing) was available add tambourine, bass, lead or something else.  By todays standards it was an archaic way of recording but produced better sound quality than anything we had used before.  On some tracks I would play drums while Les played guitar and sang and on others Les would play drums while I did the guitar and vocals,  typically depended on who picked the song or who’s original song we were recording.  Les, Bret and Steve went on to form the Inspectors band while I went on to startup the Reflection Band.

Story

The Allies Band was formed around 1982 with the remnants of the Senceless band Jon Sheffield and John Heaney teamed up with Steve Hendrickson and Dave Roquemore.   Practice was held in the attic of Dave Roquemore’s parents house that was very spacious with a stage on one end and a pool table on the other.  The Allies band stayed together for around two years although Jon and Dave became roommates around 1988-1990.  John and Steve Hendrickson played together on and off for many years after.   It was thru Steve Hendrickson that Jon met Les Soltescz in the mid 80s with whom he wrote and recorded many if his early original music featured in the Jon & Les and originals sections of this website.
